How to ward off those pesky mosquitoes

Couple having dinner outdoors.

As much as we love spending the long summer evenings outdoors on the patio, what we don’t love are mosquitoes and their bites. While it’s near impossible to avoid mosquitoes all the time, Frank Ferragine has some ideas to keep the bugs at bay.

Step one: avoid colognes and perfumes. “Any fragrances are really bad,” says Frankie. The sweetness and the smell attracts them, so if you’re thinking about an extra spritz of your favourite scent, you had better think twice!

While dark and calm conditions might sound like the recipe for a perfect lazy evening, watch out! Mosquitoes also love these conditions — luckily there are simple ways to build up your defences, such as the colour of your clothing. Mosquitoes prefer darker conditions, which means you should probably stay away from a black t-shirt.  Frankie recommends wearing light colours at night: “Light colours reflect the light so mosquitoes won’t be attracted.”

Another line of defence is certain vitamins: Frankie recommends B1 patches or the new mosquito-protecting pill called Mozi-Q .

Everyone has used bug spray before, but Frankie warns to stay away from aerosol to avoid ingesting the harsh chemicals. Instead, opt for a natural spray. There are also wearable mosquito-repelling devices that send out a frequency.

If you’re entertaining on your patio, try using a Stinger device that attracts mosquitoes to it and then zaps them away. A device like this will protect up to half an acre.
